Dr. Molenaar is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Human Development and Family Studies at Pennsylvania State University. He earned two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Utrecht, in 1972 and 1976, and two master’s degrees from the same institution in 1976—one in mathematical psychology and one in psychophysiology. He completed his Ph.D. in Social Sciences at the University of Utrecht in 1981.
Following his doctorate, Molenaar joined the faculty of the University of Amsterdam, where he eventually served as head of the Department of Methodology. In 2005, he joined the faculty of Pennsylvania State University, where he later became Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Human Development and Family Studies.
Molenaar’s research has advanced the integration of dynamic systems modeling, time-series analysis, and person-specific methodologies in psychology. In 2013, he received the Sells Award for Distinguished Multivariate Research from the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology. He is a past president of the Society and a former editor of Multivariate Behavioral Research.
