Dan Bauer received his doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in applied statistics in 2002, also at UNC. He was a faculty member at North Carolina State University from 2002-2004 before returning to UNC where he now serves as Director of the L.L. Thurstone Psychometric Laboratory, “leading” the Quantitative Psychology Graduate Program (a bit of a goat rodeo, if we’re being honest). He also co-directs (with the irrepressible Patrick Curran) the Center for Statistical Training (CenterStat), a private organization dedicated to the dissemination of statistics, data science, and research methods. His academic research centers on the development, evaluation, and application of latent variable models, including factor analysis, multilevel models, structural equation models, and finite mixture models. A principal goal of his work is to facilitate the analysis of longitudinal data, particularly with respect to problem / health risk behaviors and developmental psychopathology. In his spare time, he likes to run (albeit slowly and over limited distances).
