The Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology (SMEP) is a Section 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of multivariate statistical approaches in psychology. For many years, the organization has supported educational activities at a variety of levels of development, for undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals.
One educational goal has been promoting diversity in the community of quantitative psychologists. In accord with this goal, since 2004 SMEP has supported an annual conference for persons from underrepresented groups who are interested in learning more about quantitative methods. The conference is called Quantitative Training for Underrepresented Groups (QTUG), and in recent years has been coordinated with the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the American Psychological Association, as well as SMEP. Since 2004 more than 300 students have participated in QTUG, and its graduates are now taking their places on psychology faculty at institutions such as the University of Southern California and Spelman College.
In addition to QTUG, the society has provided travel stipends to minority graduate students to participate in continuing education events and workshops in quantitative psychology. More than 35 awards have been granted since the program began in 2009.
SMEP invites individuals to become involved in the initiative to promote more diversity in quantitative psychology by becoming financial donors. Contributions made to the SMEP Fund for Diversity Promotion will be used to facilitate educational opportunities for persons from underrepresented groups, including support for the QTUG conference, travel stipends for quantitative training workshops and presentation of quantitative training sessions in institutions that serve underrepresented groups. Contributions are eligible for tax deductions in the U.S.
